The Timeless Game of Strategy
Originating from 6th-century India as Chaturanga, chess models strategic conflict between two opposing 16-piece armies on an 8x8 grid. Victory requires cornering the opposing king in checkmate. (which you can practice move-by-move on our ChessSchool interactive tactical board).
Piece Movement Basics
- King: Moves one square in any direction. Must be safeguarded at all times.
- Queen: The strongest piece, commanding unbounded straight and diagonal files.
- Rook: Orthogonal movement across ranks and files.
- Bishop: Diagonal trajectories restricted to its color complex.
- Knight: Leaps over pieces in an "L" pattern (two squares then one orthogonal).
- Pawn: Advances forward, attacks diagonally, and promotes upon reaching the eighth rank.
